“RIP to a SA Hip Hop legend Ben Sharpa sad news to receive today but the music will live forever.”

Regular artist Lex Lafoy write on Facebook say:

“I will never forget that year at Back To The City. I heard the crowd chanting the chorus to Ben Sharpa’s ‘Hegemony’. That sh*t changed my life. Condolences to your beautiful wife Thando and your family. Thank you for all you’ve given this industry. All you’ve given the art [sic]. We love you. Rest in Power Kaptin oh my Captain.”

Dem born Ben Sharpa for Kgotso Semela in Soweto but him spend him childhood for Chicago, US. Him first contact with hip hop na for 1985 but him begin rap when him dey secondary school even though say na high school dem dey call am.

Him come back South Africa in 1993 and come establish himself as underground artist when him form cult crews like GroundWorks and Audio Visual. Him later turn regular face on the hip hop scene as him begin rap about things wey dey happen around, politics and the society.

In 2001 him share the stage with US hip hop artists Black Thought, Mr Len and Jean Grae. In 2003 him win one freestyle battle competition wey MTN South Africa sponsor. This follow give am nationwide and international exposure in countries like Holland, Belgium, England and Switzerland.
